PRK Eye Surgery
Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) is a type of refractive surgery used to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Unlike LASIK and SMILE surgeries, PRK does not involve creating a corneal flap. Instead, the outer layer of the cornea, called the epithelium, is gently removed before reshaping the underlying corneal tissue with an excimer laser. This allows light to focus properly on the retina, resulting in improved vision. PRK surgery is particularly suitable for individuals with thinner corneas or those who are not candidates for LASIK due to certain corneal conditions.

After PRK Procedure

Following PRK surgery, patients can expect some discomfort and temporary side effects as the eyes heal. The most common symptoms include mild to moderate pain, blurred vision, light sensitivity, and tearing. These symptoms typically peak within the first few days after surgery and gradually improve over the following days and weeks.
Patients are usually prescribed medicated eye drops to promote healing, reduce inflammation, and prevent infection. It’s important for patients to follow their surgeon’s post-operative instructions carefully, including attending follow-up appointments to monitor the healing process and ensure optimal visual outcomes.
While the initial recovery period may be longer compared to LASIK or SMILE surgery, many patients ultimately achieve clear and stable vision with PRK, making it a valuable option for vision correction.
What To Expect?
Biggest advantage of PRK is its versatility in correcting a wide range of refractive errors, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. The procedure can be customized to each patient’s unique eye anatomy and visual needs, resulting in excellent visual outcomes and high patient satisfaction rates. Furthermore, PRK is associated with minimal risk of flap-related complications such as flap dislocation or flap-related infections, which may occur with LASIK surgery. With its proven track record of safety and effectiveness, PRK remains a popular choice for individuals seeking long-term vision correction without the need for glasses or contact lenses.
